Broken Glass Abstracts at Higher Magnification

It is so much fun to look for appealing compositions in closeup images of abstract scenes! When I find an attractive composition that doesn't fill the frame using my macro lens, I make use of extension tubes, in this case by adding a 36mm tube.

Both images are captures of separate areas of the same breakage in a drinking glass. The magnification ratio in both images is about 1.4:1, which means the captured scenes are about 30% smaller than my sensor, or about 3/8" x 9/16" (about 10mm x 15mm). The second photo was cropped but only on the sides to display a square format.

Both images were desaturated to monochrome because there would have been no benefit to convert using a color filter, which is a relatively rare situation in the big scheme of monochrome photography.

    Setup
The background is translucent white acrylic. A medium continuous-light lamp was shining through the background toward the subject and camera.

Very nice images; i remember my childhood days; we used to place a thread wet with colored ink, placed it in between two white pages of a book, closed the book, then drew the thread out from the book, keeping the book pressed; then when the book was opened some beautiful design would be there in the book; these patterns made me remember those days

Mike, I second 'wow.' Image #1 is brilliant. I especially like the 'swirl' leading 'somewhere.'
    Cheers Ole
