    Abstract of Fluted Glass

This transparent drinking glass has fluted sides. The prismatic refractions of the fluted shapes create the color.

The magnification ratio is about 1:1.7, which means the scene is about 70% larger than my APS-C camera sensor.

    Setup
The background is translucent white acrylic. A medium continuous-light lamp is shining through the background toward the subject and camera.

A very cool abstract. I like the different pattern that the blue makes in the centre of the image.

Looks like you are having loads of fun with this abstract/macro series. Loving them. What about continuing the theme to some of your wine bottles for another dimension ?

That's always a possibility. An empty wine bottle probably has more potential than one with wine in it. I don't remember if I kept the one wine bottle that we broke, though I suppose I could intentionally break one. However, of all the broken glass I've photographed and plan to continue photographing, I've never broken anything intentionally.

There is also lots of potential for abstracts of wine being poured, wine in a glass or wine in a decanter. Perhaps also for wine corks.

It really is a matter of finding abstract compositions in transparent glass rather than predicting them. The best we can do is to be aware of the characteristics that generally exist, such as knowing that cut glass can create light by prismatic refraction. Even then, we can't know (at least I can't know) what the shapes will be especially when the scene is so small that it's about the size of a standard digital camera sensor.

I wasn't particularly thinking of a broken wine bottle. With such close up work, I would think (but I haven't tested) that the glass of a wine bottle may have it's own flaws/shapes etc to be explored.

    Nice shot.
As I can see you become the Sherlock Holmes with his magnifying glass on every piece of glass

Mike, I would like to see a little more of the bottle. I do like the play of colour and shade in the bottom half of the picture though. That is only my opinion.
    Cheers Ole
