    Autos

The term Auto in India refers to the AutoRickshaw, which are essentially the same as tuktuks found in South-East Asia. This shot was taken in downtown Bangalore, with a mosque and the Beef Market in the background.

This area is pure hustle and bustle with traffic and people galore. I timed the shot to take advantage in a break in the traffic, but people are still darting in and out at the right hand edge of the frame, where there are many fruit and vegetable sellers just past the right frame of the image.

These look rather nice tuk-tuks compared to those I travelled in in Sri Lanka, where they are known to be the most dangerous form of road transportation (and that's saying something when you see Sri Lankan bus drivers in action). But I loved them. Went everywhere in Kandy by tuk-tuk.

A lovely image. You feel and smell the atmosphere.

Yes - they are well known for being crazy here too. The drivers seem to consider themselves pedestrians and seem to have no issues at all going the wrong way down one-way streets, traveling in areas reserved for pedestrians, etc. and basically driving everywhere at full throttle. Being a relatively large person, my weight seems to help as a speed limiter.

I've also ridden these three-wheelers in Peru and Guatemala, so they are not just an Asian vehicle.

Stick a Ford Coyote V8 in that thing and you'll have something. Certainly not what I expected when I saw "Autos" as the thread title.

Nice image....these auto drivers anywhere in India are wonderful people...how they tactfully drive amidst crowded jam-packed roads is quite amazing....But never talk to them about ethics of the road driving, they will laugh at you; just reach where you want

None of the ones I have taken spoke English, so I have not been able to have a conversation with one of the drivers. I have also noticed that the meters do not work when a Caucasian passenger climbs on board, but when an Indian passenger climbs in they miraculously start functioning again.

VERY MUCH TRUE INDEED; they can't chat with you but they will definitely cheat you on payments; they must be thinking this way...'even government is keeping hiked rates for foreign tourists on all tourist spots; then why should we refrain?'

They're not confined to the Far East. They can also be found in Lisbon, Portugal albeit to all accounts, providing a more civilised ride. Moreover they are part of the 24/48 hr bus pass system. I guess just sensibly economic no matter where you are.

The ones I get a chuckle about are the occasional ones with Uber markings...

Nice shots Manfred. Since I find the discussion quite amusing (being an Indian), I thought you might like having a decco at this.. :-)

I really like #1. I love riding on different types of transportation throughout the world.

My favorite is the Filipino Jeepney but coming in as a close second is the pedicap of Saigon.
