I see another picture with the tree -- it is trying to be a composer in a theatre or something....even the shadow on the right looks interesting too.
I'm curious as to how you came by the title.
Wonderful in B and W and the Walker Evans quote is perfect. I really like photos that you want to make up stories about.
To me the tree is roughly shaped like a cross and perhaps the mafiosos are packing bibles.

For me, it is quite easy to see the Crucifixion in the top part of the tree. I think I would have left out the two figures and let the image stand for itself.
I love it. The two figures could be mafia hiding in the shadow of The Cross (I think). It works with me on so many levels. That is only my opinion.
