    Simone and Richard at Gichigami

This was taken a few years ago on an Excellent Adventure to Lake Superior, which for some strange reason I always think of as Ojibwe Gichigami, which is it's Aboriginal name.
While my dear Photobuds Simone and Richard were busy shooting waterscapes, I noticed a Great Lakes freighter far out on the water, and as always when I see them, I was overcome with a feeling of longing to know the mystery of their voyages. This combined with the dark, scudding sky made for a scene that I had to shoot.

    Robert,

Could just be my monitor settings but Simone, Richard, and the foreground water/sand are a bit on the dark side and the skies compete for my attention. I also viewed the image on my thinkpad which displays everything vibrantly and the colors were much nicer but skies still competing with foreground. Willing to concede that every vision is a matter of preference. Nicely captured and composed.

    John,
    I agree with your assessment.
I think this picture is more about memories of a time and place that has meaning for me, than a shot that is a great composition. It was cold, windy and desolate but I was with good friends, sharing an experience which is why it matters, and why I composed it as I did.
But that doesn't negate or lessen it's shortcomings.
    I appreciate your comments.

    Hi Robert,

The composition is fine but I took the caption literally as a focus on the two people and to me they should be emphasized as much as possible because they are such a small portion of the composition. Color and brightness of the subject is just what I felt was the best way to make them standout. Leading lines is another way but the lines from the waves were almost lost in the tones.
