Belize Botanic Gardens

The Belize Botanic Gardens located near San Ignacio is the first botanic gardens established in the country surprisingly recently in 1993. (There are now others.) It began as a partnership between the owners of a local resort and some other investors.

It's rather difficult to find because the only sign indicating where to leave the main road is small and is seen only when driving in one direction (away from San Ignacio). Then when you get back into the small dirt roads, the signage confusingly describes it using a different name, duPlooy's Botanic Gardens, because the duPlooys owned the local resort mentioned above. A car with high clearance also might be needed to navigate the dirt road. All of that perhaps explains why we saw only one other tourist at the site.

The midday light was harsh, so I concentrated on capturing images taking advantage of the shade, backlit situations and close-ups.

Really enjoyed that first shot. I like the Hosta shot (#5) too and wish I could add one like that to my collection, what a beauty. ..I think it's a Hosta. ;-)
