Recently I set my D7200 to use back button focus. My question is when I depress the AE-L/AF-L button to focus does the camera set exposure at this time or does it set exposure when I depress the shutter button?

The important issue is that you can configure back-button auto focusing to handle exposure how you prefer. In my manual for the D7000, all of the configurations are explained in the explanation of "f5: Assign AE-L/AF-L Button." I didn't take the time to download the manual for your camera but I'm confident the same information is there for you to review.
Thanks guys.....I'm going through the different configurations now. It's about time I did this.

Dave I found this a very good video on using back focus button.

Dave, I have a D7200 and I used the information on the Steve Perry video that Allan recommends when I set up my camera for BBF.
Thanks all. I watched the video and now I'm in the know.......I think
