    Ballerina in training

I've started another photo essay on our children and grandchildren, and their relationships with their parents and grandparents. So I've started scouring my old binders of slides for images to scan and found this one.
Taken about 30 years ago when our daughter was six or seven. I moved all the furniture out of the living room and shot her in natural light from the south windows. Our ballerina in training.

Your theme, especially that of the relationships, is really wonderful as is this particular photo. Everything about the mood is just right for me.

Did your daughter keep up the ballet stuff beyond this age? I ask because I have a niece who has always loved ballet since before that age. Now that she is in college, she is not only still dancing but also doing choreography. It's all for personal enjoyment with no career aspirations.

    John,
    Thanks for commenting.
    Mike,
Thanks you for the kind comments.
Yes, Joanna did keep it up.
We were very fortunate with our kids as they never dabbled in activities, but liked then right from the start and kept them up.
She danced from the age of about five and went to the local high-school of the arts in the dance program. She stopped after high school but a couple of years ago at about 36 returned to the National Ballet School here in Toronto where she takes adult ballet classes. Her greatest regret is that her oldest child now seven has no interest in dance.

Robert, I wonder how she will feel right now if you show this picture to her? I like her exposure and her snooty look would have been nicer if she is in another position than slouching, don't you think? Do have others? Just curious...

    Izzie,
While she hasn't seen this picture in 30 years, she won't see it until I finish the photo essay in case this one is included.
But more to your point, I think she'll like it just fine. As I recall she wasn't smiling because at the time I asked her not to, possibly because of missing baby teeth, and the pose which is relaxed was probably assumed at my insistence.
I do have others and I'll likely get some of them scanned after I get the essay finished.
These things always take much longer when one is relying on other people to supply images one doesn't have, and this one is no exception.

Lovely portrait... I might suggest some noise (grain) reduction and opening the shadows a TAD.

I have always wanted to shoot ballerinas in a ballet studio but, have just never had the opportunity (or made the opportunity)

When you finished that photo essay, I am sure she will like it and will critique your shots too. She will appreciate tht project of yours....something to keep forever.

    Izzie,
I agree that she'll probably like the photo essay, but as for critiquing my photos, that won't happen.
While because of her many years of Ballet and Modern Dance training Joanna has a critical eye for dancers when she attends the Ballet and dance recitals, she readily admits having no feel for visual arts such as painting or photography, and can't distinguish schlock from brilliant works of art.

    Unfortunately I won't.
This isn't based on an observation of mine, but rather on an admission from Joanna.
No matter, she loves cats so I'm still quite fond of her.
