St. John's Bridge

This is an older shot but new to PP. This bridge is located in Portland, OR. All comments welcome.

The second is after trying out some of your suggestions :-) . I wish this was a sharper shot to start with and that I could have taken it with my newer and better lens but the bridge isn't going anywhere and I can go back and visit it again someday. Thanks, thanks again. ...oops, I see I left a tiny slice on RHS at the top...

Thanks John. That's my husband's head and I just couldn't clone him out. I didn't notice he was in the shot until I downloaded the card. It was a surprise and he's so well centered though a little blurry - he's a fast walker. I think he's staying ;-)

A fascinating structure that makes for a good image Susan. I don't even mind your hubby's head but I would do something about the sharpening halo behind him.

Knowing the identity of the photo bomber just makes it more frustrating.

This scene offers all sorts of interesting compositions, so it's well worth revisiting often if it's near where you live. It seems like it should be easy to line yourself up perfectly centered as you've done, but for whatever reason that's always difficult for me to do.

The image appears flat to me and when I review the histogram I realize why: consider adjusting the black point to get to a true black and then perhaps increase the mid-tone contrast just slightly. This image would also work well as a monochrome to emphasize the interesting shapes.

As for whether your husband should be included in the image, we occasionally have to make decisions about how an image looks when sentimental reasoning and artistic reasoning collide. This image is an example of that in my mind. No decision about that is right or wrong in my opinion.

A nice image Susan Cropping the air from both sides might create a good look. +1 to Mike's comment about the black point and the midtone contrast.

Can you do that in LR or is the best course to not over sharpen in the first place;-)? I did a pretty heavy handed job on him in particular.

My best solution for getting rid of halos is to return to the sharpening step that created them. Then using a very small "negative" brush with soft edges set to whatever opacity works best, simply erase the halos. Depending on the situation, using 100% or 50% opacity usually works best for me. That method leaves the rest of the sharpening you desired in place. I assume this can be done in Lightroom but don't know.

Thanks Binnur and Mike for your thoughts. I did set the blk and wht point, (it is usually the second thing I do), however I did mess with it a bit before posting this. I also did not use my favorite contrast tool in Color Effects or the tone curve which would have helped with the midpoint contrast. I also used noise reduction more liberally than usual so that may be where the flatness is coming from..? Again thanks!

I can go back and redo that adjustment in LR but if I add a new adjustment which I THINK this is everything else after that will be gone BUT! I think this can be accomplished in Luminar which I am learning about right now OR I could make a virtual copy and try to unsharpen that. Whatever the case I'm going to try and figure that out - it would be more than handy. Thanks for helping me to think about it.

Alternatively, open a reply box, then highlight and copy the text you want to quote, paste it into your reply box, highlight what you have pasted and then click on the "Wrap Quotes" tag second in from the right at the top of your reply box (looks like a text bubble).
