newbie with lightroom and photoshop in CC

I am unsure about whether my workflow principles and settings are correct.

Shoot in RAW on Canon full frame
Using HP Touchsmart 520 desktop PC ( windows 7 )
Import to Lightroom where I work on them.
Export to Photoshop
Print from PS using Epson Stylus Pro wide format printer.


I am so confused as to how to set up all the settings in both LR and PS.

Confused with Adobe ProPhoto. Adobe RGB etc..

Is there a chance that anyone could advise as to how to set up the settings to get the best screen to print results. I understand that won't ever be exactly the same due to the way that they show the images ( back lit and reflected ) but I wish to be able to get them as close as I can...

The monitor and the printer have both been calibrated using ColorMunki Photo so I have a dedicated ICC profile but not quite sure how and where to use this info.

I get lost in all the various places to alter the settings in LR and PS especially with regards to working spaces and color management policies..etc..

I can't help with the printing side but offer some general comments on colour management.

With LR (and ACR), you don't have a choice in the colour spaces that it works with when you are editing. So, no problem there, it looks after everything for you.

There are choices of colour space in LR and ACR but these only apply to the file when it is exported. The most popular choices are probably ProPhoto RGB and Adobe RGB. The former has a larger gamut but the benefits of that are perhaps debatable. I use Adobe RGB and it works fine for me. Others swear by using ProPhoto. Either way, you should be OK.

When you open this file in PS, the image will be edited in the colour space you selected in LR.

Viewing this image in either LR or PS brings the ICC Display profile into play (the one created by your monitor calibration). When you create this profile, the software should automatically make it your default profile that will be used by the monitor. You can check this by looking at Control Panel/Color management in Windows. You should be able to recognise the name you gave it! You can also select your printer device in the Control Panel/CM module and once again should find your profile for the printer from your calibration exercise.

One final thing to remember is that if you are exporting your image from PS for web viewing, it is best to convert the colour space to sRGB before saving as a jpeg. This will maximise your chances of people viewing it online getting the correct colours. To do this, go into Edit/Convert to Profile and select the Destination RGB space to sRGB IEC611966-2.1.

I do all catalog management, importing, exporting, printing and basic adjustments using Lightroom. If I need to use Photoshop for advanced edits I open it from Lightroom and return the file (layered tiff) to Lightroom after the edit has been done. I now hardly ever print directly from Photoshop. All work is done in a ProPhoto RGB 16bit colour space and exporting or printing are done to whatever colour space and file type that is correct for the application which for me it is mostly sRGB as jpeg.

Lightroom comes as standard with Photoshop CC and I have occasionally had a go at understanding the complexities of Lightroom. It just appears needlessly complex to me. I wish I could permanently get rid of it as it is just causing clutter on my Desktop screen.

Did you get Bridge with the CC download? It is a free add on which does everything for me that Lightroom can give but is far easier to use.

Also, do you use Adobe ACR for the initial Raw work?

I find this method so simple. Do the basic editing work in ACR then switch directly to CC for any additional editing. Bridge gives me everything I want in the form of cataloguing, viewing and opening images.

And going directly from ACR to CC is very useful when using Smart Objects which can be returned directly to ACR for any additional work with just a couple of clicks.

For some reason, I could never figure out how Bridge works so Geoff's workflow never worked for me. But it clearly works for many people.
