Riscal de San Juan (Las Palmas): a suburb of colours

While in Las Palmas of the Gran Canarias last week, I made a few outings at dawn to capture the sunrise over this colourful suburb - Riscal de San Juan. They are probably the most photographed houses of the city, and it's easy to see why. The houses were originally painted with paint used for boats, presumably by the sea-faring tenants or owners of the houses; hence the diverse range of colours. I imagine that since then, the suburb has maintained its unique appearance by continuing the tradition of brightly painted houses.

#1. Taken just before dawn. A panorama of three photos.

Very Nice! I really like #1 with the mix of the colors on the buildings and the glow of the exterior lights.

For me pictures taken at blue hour are the most photogenic.

I like these two separately but as a set feel they should be of the same subject and the same dimensions

These work well. Nicely sharp focus throughout the scenes.

I prefer #1 as the light and the colors are better

I am with Binnur, Tony...the first one is most beautiful and photogenic than #2. What bothered me in #2 is that tree that covers the scene in its totality. Perhaps you could find a place to shoot without that tree? The colour is OK if looked at it as it is though. I like the different colours for its own merits.

Thanks to you all for your comments.

You're right Kate, they don't really belong as a set. My intention in posting them together was to show the difference that the time of day has on a scene.

I actually like the second photo more. It was taken after the blue hour and the colours were more diffuse as a result of the African dust that was lingering over the island. I modified the PP a bit, and below is the latest version. For me, the palm tree in the foreground is a key part of the scene, as it is emblematic of the island. We all have our viewpoints and they're all equally valid. (And sometimes I find myself in the minority, which does make me question my reasoning!)

Well, if you put it that way and you processed it this way (edited version), who am I to disagree with you? I like this second one as you edited it because the colours pops everywhere. I specially like the bougainvilleas at the bottom as it settles down the yellow tints of the whole scenario. I would suggest remove the car near the patch of the bougainvilleas and also those two at the bottom of the right hand side of the frame but then to make your scene more pristine looking but then they are part of progress.

OFF TOPIC: Last night, I was watching a food program on telly that features Madrid food scenes and dishes (Bizarre Foods byAndrew Zimmern) and had my husband's best friend and his wife watching it too and so we ended up at a latin restaurant for dinner serving tapas. OK...so now we are planning a trip to their place in Spain. They are all excited. Me? I am still thinking...
