    The fishmonger

This is a pretty typical scene throughout India - raw fish laid out on a table, with the seller being nearby. Unlike other parts of the world, the raw fish is not chilled or put on ice. The fishmonger has a fly swish to chase away the flies that land on "the product".

This shot was taken in the Russel Market area of downtown Bangalore, India on the last day of my stay there.

Remember there are 1.3 billion Indians around with stronger immune systems than you and I have. Meat, poultry and seafood are not refrigerated, yet they seem to survive eating these foods that have been out in the hot sun all day. A lot of them drink water that would definitely make you or me quite ill.

It's interesting that though Bangalore is the high-tech center of India, fish is still being sold this way. Nice documentation of that!

It's cute that the man is sitting in a pair of stacked chairs rather than in just one chair.

India is definitely a place of contrasts and Bangalore is no different. While you see offices with Microsoft and Oracle logos on them, they all display giant satellite dishes as the local internet infrastructure is not particularly robust (in my experience).

There are Maseratti, Ferrari and Porsche dealerships, yet on the roads the traffic rarely goes faster than 20 - 30 km / hr (15-20 mph).

Beautiful old trees line some of the major streets as Bangalore was formerly known as "The Garden City", but with rapid growth, there is a lot of trash everywhere and the name "Garbage City" seems to be more appropriate, based on what the long time residents told us. The population of Bangalore was around 8.5 million in 2012 and five years later is pushing 12 million.

But frankly, that is just a reflection of India. The ancient traditions co-exist side by side with the modern world. The KFC and McDonalds are not far from the street vendors and small eateries selling dozas and biriyani.

    Re: The fishmonger

Many of the San Diego Party Fishing boats do no have refrigerated hold in which to store the fish that have been caught. Instead, they hang burlap sacks on hooks and place the fish in these sacks with the only cooling being occasional rinses of seawater over the sack. My son in law's boat has a refrigerated storage for the fish we catch and our fish are a lot more fresh than those caught by party boat patrons. This is especially true on a hot summer day when the fish are caught early in the morning and stay in the burlap sacks all day long. However, to my knowledge, nobody has become ill due to that method of fish storage...
