Completely agreed.
We photographers often mention that we need to understand a subject to be able to most effectively photograph it. I believe sometimes the same is true about understanding a subject to be able to most effectively critique a photo of it. I don't know much about horses but I vividly remember a lot about them and about riding them, sometimes with no saddle, almost every day while living on a ranch as a small boy. There is no doubt in my mind that my critique of horse photography would be different if those everyday experiences were not still very much in my memory.
