    Wi-Fi Capability for Canon 7D Mark-2

I have just attended another of Canon's free seminars in which I learned that Canon sells a SD sized WI-FI card which, when inserted into the SD slot of the 7D2 camera, gives the camera WI-FI capability.

The price is not all that bad qt about $40 USD and will, among other things, allow me to control the camera via my Smartphone. I learned at the seminar, that there is an App, DSLR Dashboard, which will also allow automatic focus stacking...

I have an older Android tablet that I plan to use with this rig...

It might be worth trying, but the data rate on those WiFi cards is abysmally slow if you are looking at sending full-sized data files across. When I use my CamRanger, I only transmit the smallest, lowest quality jpegs across and store the actual raw files in the camera.

Manfred, Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that. However, I don't think that it would impact me very much since, my primary use would be to use my smart phone or Android tablet as a camera viewing and control device.

That is essentially what I was writing about Richard. You are still viewing data that must be transmitted via WiFi and some of that will be what you are trying to shoot and afterwards what you have shot. When I use my CamRanger or the built in functionality in my Panasonic GX7 to communicate with my tablet or phone I need to make the appropriate settings to minimize the amount of data flowing between the devices and camera to get a decent response time.

This discussion is interesting. When I use Cam-Fi to do this stuff, the size of the file being transmitted after the shutter has been released doesn't seem to affect the speed of controlling the camera before and while releasing the shutter. Controlling the camera and releasing the shutter seems to be instantaneous. I'm controlling everything using a small laptop, so maybe I would encounter other differences when using a phone.

Good news since I have always used RAW and separately a 2.5mb jpeg on my SD card . Using this 2.5mb pictures, how long would the transfer rate be on average ?

I can't speak for the Canon system, but distance and network connectivity do affect this. If I use the system in the house while there is considerable network traffic (the bandwidth is shared with other devices on the network) it can be painfully slow. Out in the country the image will show up within a second or so, although if I am shooting from far away (theoretical limit on my setup is about 75m / 200ft) I have seen things slow down a fair bit as well as the quality of the transmitted LiveView image drop. When I do long duration shots, I will try to find a comfortable place to sit to work the camera so that can be some distance away.

    Simple answer is "it depends".
