Civil War Soldier Talking To Kids 1935 COLORIZATION

    Hi Everybody,

I saw this photo while browsing the internet and thought it would be cool to see it in color. I never realized that in 1935 there were still Civil War Veterans alive. This picture was taken in Philadelphia in 1935 from what I've been able to find. If you have any other info on this photo feel free to share. Otherwise, enjoy!

    Zak...

I also like this image and the way you colorized it...

I really don't have anything to add except that the old gentleman was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic as signified by his hat badge. The GAR was like a combination American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars for men who served in the various Union Military and Naval branches....

My Great-great Grandfather who fought in the Civil War died in 1913 at the age of 75. However, he was 32 years old when he joined in 1862. The war ended in 1865 so that was 70 years prior to the photo being taken. That would probably put this gentleman somewhere in his mid-eighties or in his nineties.

The last documented veteran of the Civil War actually lived until 1956. He was a drummer boy during the conflict...

It was really horrible to have twelve and thirteen year old boys in the midst of battle as drummer boys. Drummers were a very important part of the infantry since most commands were issued through drum rolls...

    Rpcrowe,

Thanks for that info! I actually found a paragraph on this photo in a Google search and attached it to the colorization I posted to Flickr. I figured that he was a drummer boy or something since 1935 still seems too long for one of the older soldiers to have lived.

    Excellent colorization, as always!

It seems that the gentleman and boys are at the base of a monument, so I wonder if it's a Civil War monument.

I'm led to think that because I had a similar experience in Istanbul on a government holiday. An older man also bearded and dressed in his military uniform literally covered on his chest with military memorabilia was sitting at the base of a monument. Though we didn't speak each other's language, it was very clear as he showed me his photographs and memorabilia that he was very proud of his military service and the war he fought in. Thanks for your colorization that brings back the wonderful memory of the great "conversation" I had with him.

He was seated at the base of the George Washington monument located at the corner of Washington and Linden St in Scranton, PA. I originally read it was Philly but I was mistaken.

As others have said, yet another superb example of your skill in this particular art. You really have become an expert in the field and I'm sure there are bodies out there who would use your skills if you wanted to pursue this for profit.

Thanks, Donald. I'm all ears to anyone that would like to hire me to color a family photo for them. I've never been paid to color before, so I wouldn't even know what to charge. Each colorization can take 5-12 hrs depending on the amount of things in the photograph. I doubt I could charge $200 for a colorization..... Or could I!?

The US Civil War ended in 1865. It is only 70 years to 1935 and many young boys were involved.

The last known civil war veteran died in 1956.

Remember, In Europe 100 miles is a long journey. In America, 100 years is a long time.

This is yet another example of your amazing skills - I never cease to be impressed with your work!

The image itself is interesting for me to see that old veteran surrounded by a generation for whom the Civil War was rather distant history. Still, the same thing happened to our WWI veterans, is happening to the WWII, Korean and Vietnam vets too...

Thanks, Trev. That's nice of you to say! You should check out my Marilyn Monroe colorization I just posted. I've finally had some time to color again and I'm posting more.
I agree that it's interesting seeing an image where a soldier from another era per se is taking to kids that can't really comprehend what he went through at their age.
