    Canon lens firmwear

I was surprised to find that Canon has introduced a firmwear option for its lenses. This I found for the new 24-105 f4 Mark II when on the 5D IV. I don't see extra contacts on the lens so presumably Canon has found a way to use existing contacts. Has anyone seen any background to this feature.

Have you tried searching with "firmware", it might give better results.
(firmware being half way between hardware and software)

Sorry, as a Nikon shooter, I don't follow this topic.

Nope, haven't seen any background to this.

One thing about firmware, there is no system in place that I know of, to be notified about firmware updates. You do have to go searching to dee if there have been any updates for pieces of equipment that you might own ... unless anyone can advise me differently, for which I shall be grateful.

    Go to this page:

    https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/p...rt?tab=drivers

select your lens, and click on firmware. I just tried this, and it shows the update for the 24-105 II but none for any of the lenses I own, including the original 24-105. This suggests to me that is a relatively new thing. I didn't dig further to find the installation instructions, but I assume it must be via download to a card and then through a camera body.

I can confirm that Panasonic does release firmware updates to their lenses and these can be installed by mounting the lens on the camera body. This has been available for a couple of years. The most recent update I ran on one of my lenses allowed the camera / lens combination to use both in-lens and in body image stabilization at the same time. In the past, the only time in body stabilization was triggered was when the camera detected not in-lens stabilization mechanism.

That looks more as a camera update.

I just saw an instruction video for the Sigma docking software. It changes the behaviour of the lens as the focus range, speed of focusing, stabilization behaviour and that kind of things. Some of them could be done with buttons, now electronic. I think this counts for the Canon too. When I find an English version I will link it.

As far as I know, Canon does not sell anything like the Sigma dock.

    Re: Canon lens firmwear

Michael that question needs to come with a whole lot more information:

    1. What do you define as "improve your camera"? that depends on...
    2. What issues do you have right now?
    3. What kind of photography are you considering improving: birds, macro, landscape, portrait...
    4. What camera equipment do you have at the moment?
    5. What is your budget?
