Recently totally renovated at some cost, the famous Flying Scotsman paid a brief visit to this part of the world yesterday. Seemed a good excuse for a few hours out with the camera.

On the first one, did you consider going for a more panoramic format by cropping from the top to exclude the sky? I wondered if that threw more attention onto the train?

Donald, I did crop as you suggest originally but it reduced the feeling of space on the hillside. I ended up preferring to show the train in the space of the North Yorks Moors but I guess that it would work either way. My mistake was not to climb the hillside behind me. It was a bit boggy but the additional height would have solved the problem. I shall be trying again if only because the weather had caused me to set a high ISO but of course as the train approached, the clouds parted. Result was a higher than needed shutter speed and more noise than I would have liked given the crop needed.

Mike, there were quite a few but not as many as there were a bit further down the line at the Ribblehead viaduct (see HERE) where the crowds were literally swarming. The trouble with Google Street View is that you may have found a good vantage point but so do many others.

I like both of them, John. Since the second one was already cropped, I kind of like that the first one included its environment. I am just wondering why my head kept telling me that the lower part of the bridge seems elongated...

I agree with Donald suggestion.
I made a selection of the top (until the smokes) and made a transformation to reduce the height.
IMO, it gives more dynamic while keeping the sky.

Jean, I guess what I was trying to capture was the man made beauty of the machine in the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Moors, that is the hills and the open space. Your version definitely works as an image but compressing the back drop of the hills sort of loses some of that for me. On the other hand, if I haven't conveyed that feeling to others, the images must lack something. Maybe next time.
