Coyote Stare

I had an encounter with this coyote on the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, WY.

Beautiful image. I have seen this type of stare often.

I have small piles of throwing stones situated at intervals along my fence line in place to discourage the Coyotes with an accurate toss. We don't have that many coyotes around us anymore because my area has built up considerably since I moved here.

Early on when the coyotes were prevalent, I shared my home and my life with an 85 pound German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Wolf Hybrid whose main intent in life was to keep my fenced in acre clear of any nasties - whether they be human or animal. She was quite effective in doing so!

Coyotes will seldom attack humans unless they are rabid. They will however attack a small dog on a leash being walked by a human. The best defense against that is to literally lift the dog up by the leash into your arms and yell, scream, stamp your feet and make yourself generally imposing.

Another way to prevent this is not to walk a dog (especially a small dog) in the very early morning, evening or night in areas that have coyotes. Note: I stopped at a city park in the middle of the City of Los Angeles and saw signs warning against coyote attacks.

There are noise making devices and sprays that can deter attacking coyotes or dogs and carrying a big stick (but don't speak softly - couldn't resist that pun) can help.

"Speak softly but, carry a big stick" is a bit of humor from President Teddy Roosevelt...

It was pitch black and I was waiting on the moon to rise. The Milky Way stretched across the sky overhead. I was wearing a head torch, which was turned off.

I heard shuffling out on the car parking area behind me. I turned on the flashlight and there looking at me and slowly walking across the parking area, was a coyote. He/she just looked towards me and kept walking and I just stood quietly. It was a beautiful few moments.

Coyotes can attack humans, but it rare. Most of the time they just want to get away. Problems arise when humans feed them.

Donald, I know the feeling. When I have a close interaction with coyotes, bears, wolves or any of the large ungulates that live around my home, I feel lucky to be so close to the natural world. It a major source of peace for me.
