Modern Portraits

The Guardian Newspaper publishes many fine photographs, but this selection of commissioned portraits contains a fine selection of contemporary portraiture.

Most of these portraits are really great. However, some of them should have landed on the cutting room floor or today's electronic equivalent

Some of the portraits are quite well done, but there are a number that are quite mediocre...

So just for my learning, which ones do you think are mediocre or should be on the editing room floor and why? I know this is really subjective, but was hoping I could learn a few things by asking...

I was trying to learn more about Portraiture overall....

For me the one with the orange in front of the face (you will know which one) just does not work for me.

To me they're all fairly poor. Typical news paper. If you want to study portraiture, go into an art gallery ( not the ultra modern ones ) and look at some of the old masters, taking particular notice of the light. Or look at some of the old monochrome photographers work

IMO, the really mediocre ones are:
#3 Colin Murphy
#9 Nicky Morgan
#11 Haseeb Hameeb
#12 Rachel Witheread
#18 Simon Bird

That is not to say that the others are great but, my favorites are: Angie Thomas and Heather Favell
