Food Art: rose-like apple dessert
My friend Kim brought dessert to our small dinner party of six. She made 12 of these "roses," which are formed of 96 very thin, handmade slices of apple that are held in shape by the pastry. The dessert tastes every bit as good as it looks.
Setup
The camera is suspended above the scene on a boom. The tabletop is a floor tile. A small continuous-light lamp on the lower right side is as close as possible to the scene to create shadows that are as soft as possible. Multiple layers of randomly rumpled diffusion material in front of the lower part of the lamp darkens the lower right quadrant of the scene, which otherwise would have been too bright because of its immediate proximity to the lamp. A tall reflector on the opposite side lifts the shadow tones on the tabletop and in the recesses of the subject.
