    Quiet on the river tonight

    I don't "do" landscape - and here's why...

But the PAD is all about trying something different, so instead of a mediocre bird shot, you have to suffer a mediocre landscape instead.

Last rays of the setting sun, more of a riverscape actually.
That far bank is curving around to the left, which gives the impression it isn't level, but I 'levelled' it twice in PP, so it jolly well ought to be by now
    (except I'm still not convinced)

    Nikon D5000 + Nikon 70-300mm VR: 1/60s f/13 at 70mm iso800
F11 and click image to see at 1600 x 1046

Not sure I like the composition either - I was as wide as possible without changing the lens, and it is uncropped in PP (apart from the corners due to twisting) - I guess I could have walked backwards a bit to get more foreground in.

Well, I have learned from the experience
Lets see if I can improve later in the month

I have set it as my desktop background to hammer the lesson home

Good crop with the wire from the corner running diagonally Pete,

Are these the big nets near the Drift Road, sort of Fifield way?

    Hi Grant
Just wondering if Portia is interested in a gig down here......I'm sure she could assist with my Lust assignment
Here's the Jetstar link, I'm sure is old enough to travel unaccompanied?

I can send a bloke to the airport to collect her, no problem.

I give them the CiC details everytime I hold any workshop or lecture. But I normally charge a spotters fee for this precious advice - a nice bottle of red.

    Hi Steve,

I spent a little time in Boston some years back. You may not be aware but Melbourne and Boston are 'sister cities' (whatever that means) but they do have a similar feel about them. I really liked Boston and I really like the composition here. Well done.

Hi Peter - I'm not sure I know what a sister city is either (I could probably google it though )
I actually live about 15 miles west of the city. Lately, I seem to be in Boston more for work than anything else, but I plan on getting in with my camera either this weekend or next. Then again, the foliage may keep me out of the city for a couple weeks. I've never been to Australia, but it's on my list of places I'd like to visit.

Thanks for the comment on the shot! Been a bit frustrated lately. Debated blowing off the challenge for the day, but managed to drag my butt out the door in spite of myself.

I did just google it and this is all I got.

Melbourne Sister Cities or town twinning is a concept whereby towns or cities in geographically and politically distinct areas are paired with the goal of fostering human contact and cultural links.

I suppose we are fostering contact

Yes, Pete, the estuary runs inshore for about 5 miles until coming to an abrupt end; without any river, just a few small streams.

The quay is on the southernmost branch of a number of creeks.

I'm 'saving' the overall scene for a later photo but here is a link to 'one that I created previously' which looks at the same area from a different direction http://www.pbase.com/crustacean/imag...9/original.jpg

    Day 06: October 2010 PAD

I've never done these "traffic at night" shots before Not sure I quite got it right... Any tips on ISO and aperture settings for my next try? Everything came out very red and orange. I have a bridge camera so max exposure is only 4". But does that matter?

    Hi Mel,

Simply adjust the exposure and observe the results. With night shots the highlights will generally blow anyway, so it's more important to get the midtones where you want them, and the above shot looks pretty close to me. If you use a longer shutterspeed then you'll just get longer lines, which can get a bit "ho hum" quite quickly.

The colour you got was pretty typical - you could try different white balance settings, but it's probably just as easy to adjust it in post processing. Sharpening can make a nice difference to "star" lights.
