How times have changed.
About sixty-five years ago long before plastic and shrink-wrap my Mum bought a box of tomatoes to make a batch of chutney. Yes they came in a wooden box and of course it didn't get wasted. It became a container for my shoe polish and brushes. For over fifty years it served its new purpose well although the handle broke off somewhere along the way. The daily ritual of polishing shoes before school and then work kept my leather shoes in perfect order. Gradually shoes became made of synthetic materials and the daily shine became a quick wipe with a chemical impregnated cloth.
Alas, today, a major garage clear out of 'junk' saw it head to the tip. It brought back so many memories I found it strangely hard to part with something that no one else would even give a second glance to.
The sun sets on my shoe-shine box.

I understand the sentiment. I wouldn't have thrown that box either. Somehow, I will find a use for it. A good container is always hard to find...
