    Fractured Pelvis

Charlie is a young Bichon Frise who has a fractured pelvis. The shelter was going to euthanize him but, we pulled him and had him examined by our orthopedic vet. The conclusion was that although Charlie does have a small fracture of his pelvis, he doesn't need surgery. Our vet said that a month or so of limited activity and then a period of moderate exercise will be all that it takes to return this young guy to normality.

    One more life saved...

BTW: This is Charlie a couple of hours ago when we got him from the shelter...

Richard, do you ever run into resistance from an animal shelter about handing over an animal to you? Or are you and your organization well known everywhere?

    PS. Nice photos of Charlie.

    Bruce,

We are "shelter partners" with most of the shelters in San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. Becoming a shelter partner is an involved process at the start, requiring references and other documentation. However, our rescue is well known and well thought of by the shelter personnel because we don't balk at accepting dogs who need vet care.

We are very lucky in that we have several vets who are excellent. Our main vet hospital is wonderful with a great staff and a wonderful orthopedic vet. The hospital has a large staff and we can show up at any time with or without an appointment and have our dogs seen. Of course, if surgery is involved (other than emergency surgery) we do make appointments.

The shelters require that when a rescue pulls a dog on a medical waiver, that proof of the vet care is submitted to the shelter. We always make sure that we submit the proof in a timely fashion. I also send them the before and after pictures of the dogs and we keep them informed regarding a dog's progress and eventual adoption. That's one way of keeping a good relationship with a shelter.

Richard, Yesterday, I watched that video of Hope for Paws when they rescued 9 little baby strays from a dark cave where they have to dig them out. They are from Los Angeles and I remember you once saying you were involved with them too. Anyway, I like #1 shot of Charlie here...

We have a wonderful relationship with Eldad of Hope for Paws. We have fostered and adopted out many of the dogs he and his associates have rescued. Quite often, Eldad selects us to rehabilitate dogs who have had extensive surgery. My wife is a retired registered nurse and we have over an acre of fenced in property as well as a sick bay in which dogs which are not fully mobile can recuperate.

Carmela is a Hope for Paws rescue dog. She was hit by a car and her fractured leg is mending. Carmela is due for a cast change next week which is why the bottom of her cast is a bit dirty.

This is Eldad's lovely associate Lisa when she and Eldad visited our home...

And... this is Eldad as he was video taping some of our dogs...
