Thread: A few local churches

    A few local churches

All taken in the recent nice weather. I took the first on a car trip, the other 3 on a short bike ride, travelling light with my X100 in a bumbag.
Most of the churches in the eastern half of Leicestershire are built at least partly of the local Jurassic ironstone.

Hi Dave, you obviously posted this as I was posting my explanation. It was displaying perfectly well when I uploaded it. Now re-uploaded and still looking correct at the moment.....

I love these old churches. When I was young my family attended an Eastern Orthodox church that was beautiful. I'd love to get inside of one with a camera.

I am seeing the wrong pic too. By the way, the first and last shots gives me an inspiration to take a photo of the graveyard across our church. Thanks. We always passed by there on our way to the car and always wonder if it is OK to take pictures.

Thanks Izzie. Amazingly, the correct picture is now displaying without further action on my part.
I can't see a problem with taking photos as long as they aren't disrespectful in any way. The only place I know of where there is a sign banning photos is at Whitby, where the authorities are obviously concerned about inappropriate Dracula-themed shots amongst the tombstones

Thank you Paul. Only the church at #3 is routinely open, but the key can be got nearby fairly easily for many locked churches over here. I find photographing in parish churches much more satisfactory than in most cathedrals: often one is alone, undisturbed and can work at leisure. And though I like to put a donation in the box, there is no hefty compulsory entry fee, which is the norm now in most of our major (C of E) cathedrals.

    A few local churches

Nice series Dave, well captured. When I see a church which is still standing sometimes miles from the nearest habitation I always wonder what happened to the homes the original congregation lived in.
I must make an image or two of them.

Nicely captured Dave. Perhaps a bit tight at the top but good viewpoints in all of them. I love old buildings, especially church interiors.

Thanks John. I agree about the tightness of the crops at top. At location #1 the grounds drops away quite steeply and I had to do a fair bit of perspective correction, losing some space at the top. (Ideally I'd like a tilt-shift lens). With the others, I should have taken my wide converter lens (which is very portable), which is handy where you can't step back any further and might have made just the right amount of difference.
I agree with you re church interiors

I just lost my response...there is a gremlin somewhere, either at CiC or here in my den. Anyway, as I was saying with my lost post, I like that missing shot. It was more of an environment shot than the themed ones.
