    Abstract and Concentric

Every once in a while I notice something during the normal course of day-to-day activities that gives me an idea for a photo. After years of reaching down into my kitchen cabinet for one of my stacked, stainless steel mixing bowls, which I use almost every day of the year, today I finally and inexplicably got the idea to make this abstract photo.

    Setup
The camera is mounted on a boom above the scene. The tabletop is black velvet. A small continuous-light lamp is on the left. It lights only one area of the rim of each mixing bowl, so the other areas are lit by a white reflector placed on the right side of the scene.

Mike I so admire your work for it's preciseness, to know exactly how the light will fall on a subject at a given angle is a true gift. As one who uses flash on rare occasions (and not very well even on those occasions) I find it fascinating. I am taking a speed light class in a couple of weeks and am excited to learn whatever I can.

You're absolutely correct and it's a gift I sure do wish I had. That explains why I always use continuous-light lamps whenever practical unless I need a flash to stop the action or for some other specialized purpose, such as using power not provided by continuous light. Another alternative is to use much more expensive strobes, which have continuous modeling lights for use while setting everything up. When using continuous light, I can tweek the position of the light sources, reflectors and flags while examining the image on my wirelessly tethered laptop until I get everything the way I want it.
