Indeed. The Rim Lighting effect is very nice and allows for a well executed, moody, Low Key image.

Can you remember - were the lights in the main lighting bank(i.e. the 'main' bank of lights in front of and on top of the horse) gelled Blue?

This was shot at an American Football stadium that had been set up for what I would imagine is the largest rodeo in the U.S.. There were spot lights on the horses has they came up and yes there was both red and blue gel spots as well. I need to really think about how it was done and see if it would be possible to replicate on a small scale.

Thanks for answering about the lighting.

I was curious because it occurs to me that there is a blue cast. I cannot be sure because I am logged in on my laptop and I do not have access to my Studio Monitor at the moment.

The comment about the Blue Cast is not necessarily a critical remark in so far as I find it a technical mistake or that I consider it artistically inferior.

I was more curious because I photographed a sizeable string of horses when I was in Spain. These were in a large stadium and the lighting was extremely interesting, in that it was nearly always rim lighting with a Low Key main Top and Front Lighting Banks which were typically BLUE GELLED. Your image is reminiscent of the lighting that I experienced, although it seems that you had a little more light than I, as I was typically pulling my shots at around F/4 @ 1/500s @ ISO 3200 . . . I had long thoughts choosing whether or not to Colour Correct the Main Lighting in my images during their post production: that was the main reason why I asked about the lighting and if it was gelled.

Very difficult.

Lighting replication from large to small scale fails on many matters, The main is the difficulty to replicate the 'effect of' the DISPERSION and SPREAD of a large (for example a 30Kw Main Bank) set 60ft above the Subject Area by using six 500watt lights in a large room or gymnasium with a 25ft ceiling.

Bill not sure you saw my other post but it was a string of horses at the same event. The red spot tended to cast a red color on them which I noticed in processing but more on the ends than in the middle. I am guessing that was the case because smack dab in the middle is a white horse and I did not notice any colored cast on it. Interesting......btw good eye!

This is quite lovely Barbara. If I'm honest, the bit of white showing on the legs is a bit distracting and I can't make up my mind about the cut off of the rump but it's a fine shot none the less. Nicely caught.

That was an interesting exchange of conversation between you and William there. Yes a bit of blue on the white part of the horse' head but I still like the shot even if I think it should be cropped up a bit from the bottom (I do not know where...). The angle of the shot is good as the shadow emphasizes the muscles and the strength of the horse.

Thanks Izzie, yes, trying to find a crop that might make it better has proved difficult. She was coming at me, so this is as it was taken, she got vey close. The muscular structure of these creatures is incredible!

Thank you Jean! Yes the lighting was under spotlight but there were a couple of times she got away from the spot.
