Dog Walking - candid shot at the beach

Hi,

I was out at the beach near my folks' place in Northumberland at the weekend. Typical Bank Holiday weather.

I only had a 70-300mm lens with me, because I was planning to shoot a kite festival, which unfortunately didn't happen (see previous comment about the weather). So I ended up wandering the beach, and was drawn to the reflection in the wet sand as this dog walker passed by me.

An interesting composition, but I like it. Some might complain that you chopped off the person, but I know someone is there and it adds mystery. Nicely done.

Thanks, Sergio. It was a deliberate framing decision to emphasise the dog rather than the human, and -as you say - to add a bit of mystery. 😀

I might consider cropping even more off the human (say right below the hand holding the courtesy bag) so that the image is of the dog and the reflections.

That's a good shout. Thank you. I've done exactly that, and I think it leads to a more impactful image.



I debated about the courtesy bag - I can't crop it out without decapitating the dog. I considered cloning it out, but decided to leave it.

It was shot at the lens's maximum FL of 300mm, f/13 in Aperture Priority mode, at ISO 800.

By the way, I like your avatar - I'm going backwards and forwards on the purchase of a second-hand X100T.

For clarity the comment "I like the concept" related more to the concept of the deliberate framing of the shot.

The prompts as to why I asked about the FL were:

> and it was apparent to me that it was an opportunity shot (aka 'grab shot)

The reason I asked about the FL was because it occurred to me that it certainly NOT was made with a 70mm lens and I just wanted confirmation so I could offer this comment for consideration.

It occurs to me that you were in a situation where you must shoot under the pressure of time; you were drawn to the reflection; the dog and also wanted to add a bit of mystery . . . the point is you either had enough time to pull half a dozen shots with different FRAMING - OR - you had time to pull one shot. If the situation is the latter then consider shoot wide and crop in post production.

From an artistic point of view I don't mind the body truncated, I don't mind the crop at his groin either, what I think is detracting to the image and detracting to the level of mystery is not having the whole reflection of the human in the wet sand - or if it is all there it doesn't look like it is all there as there is no 'headroom' below the reflection.

That choice having been made as a decision of FRAMING does now not allow the option to compare, contrast and choose.

I have Canon DSLRs and although I stopped Weddings a few years ago I still cover a few Social Functions. Initially I bought the Fuji as an adjunct to my working Pro DSLR Kit, because it has a Leaf Shutter (ergo Flash Sync) and it is as silent as a Church Mouse and I often shoot with a pair of Primes anyway - one each on two cameras (a 35 and an 85) so the Fuji replicated my fast 35 Prime on a 5D Series Body and is lighter and more nimble than a 5D with grip, although there are other considerations/limitations using the Fuji for fast work - but = it is no trouble carrying the Fuji in addition to two DSLRs and I sometimes do that.

But the Fuji is just so much FUN - so I use it everywhere as my 'carry around' so I think it makes for a nice Avatar
