They may be different series, time and progress marches on, etc. but the fact remains that most older Nikkor lenses do mount on to current Nikon digital cameras (since the F mount was introduced in 1959). There are a handful of old lenses that do not work (22 according to my D90 manual) but that is only a small number compared to the total number of different lenses Nikon has made. While the lower end bodies cannot meter with the old lenses, the higher end bodies do. The older primes probably hold up quite well compared to the new ones.
