A few from the waterworks museum in Brookline MA

An old pump house that used to provide water to Boston has been preserved as a museum. In the evening, it is only dimly illuminated for the most part. For the past 6 months, I have taken very few photographs other than candids of my granddaughter, but last night a few of us took some photos at the museum.. Here are two. A new style for me: high tonal contrast. C&C welcome, as always.

Processing notes: both are three-image HDR merges in LR, without autotone. Then into Photoshop after basic editing, e.g., for dodging and burning. Finally added tonal contrast using colorEfex, globally.

The second one works exceptionally well for me. Great composition and three-dimensional feel.

The first one doesn't work for me because I can't get past the white horizontal thingy that so strongly divides the image. Even if you reduced the brightness, I would probably have the same issue with the dark horizontal thingy adjacent to it. Probably due to lighting completely beyond your control.

Nice captures. I'll bet that they would look equally as good in B&W...

Machinery shots I always think of B/W, but these ones have crispy colours. I like #1 because of it but #2 looks more complicated. Nice shots.

Thanks, all. Mike, yes, that line draws my eye too much also. Ignoring the content, it would actually look better rotated 90 degrees. But you're right: we couldn't control anything. The lighting was fixed, and we also weren't allowed up onto any of the walkways, so we had to shoot from below and often from quite far away. I ended up having to do a lot more processing than I normally do as a result.

I've seen images from a few of the others, and they processed them to be very dark, which was the ambience in the room. I am not sure I want to do that, and I didn't in these.

I'm still culling and will try to find time this weekend to see if there is anything else worthwhile. I quickly did this one last night:

Great perspective and use of patterns in this last one. The wheels appear even more massive at this angle.
