    Who's Viewing Who

A capture from last year re-edited to test my b & w conversion technique. I'm mostly interested in the tones presented, are they appealing, do the b/w points needed boosting? I read somewhere that tones should be treated differently for display or printing, one author (Tony Corbell) suggested that the Zone System has to be used more carefully for prints; zone 10/0 within your capture has to be analyzed for detail loss and also the difference between zone 10 and 9 or zone 0 and 1 is dependent on the capability of your printer. For instance, in the image shown there is only a tiny spec or two falling within the zone 10 and there are several areas falling within zone 0.

John - there is something a bit strange with the PP work on this image, I think. The sidewalks showing between your subject's legs looks completely different than it does in the adjacent parts of the rest of the image.

    Hi Manfred,

I did a contrast adjustment to the subject, perhaps not enough to the surrounding areas.

    Madame Butterfly

Another capture with same zone range and no distracting editing. I know the scene is busy but this was a local production of the opera set within the foyer of a museum.

I like it - personally if it was mine I would crop off the top to remove the disembodied feet on left and crop the right to remove the open door and most of the other door and then darken down the highlight area on bottom right as then it will fill the bottom right corner - oh dear thats sounding negative, not meant to be - I like it as i feel I am there looking over the stairs at the scene. Overall tonal balance looks good to me - but I am sure others with more ability will come along and comment in a more meaningful way.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for comments and suggestions, not taken negatively at all.

I personally prefer the darker tones of the second picture (of course light sources are different).
The white frame on the first emphasizes the feeling "too bright" for me.

    John,
What I know about the Zone System you could put on the head of a pin, and still have plenty of room for all of Donald Trump's
    brain cells.
However, based on what I see in this first shot, the entire photo needs more contrast and the main subject has been over-processed to the point where she looks like she was cut and pasted onto the background.

    LOL. This is too funny.
I do agree, in my very limited experience, that the model in the first image looks especially over processed, almost plastic... what you would find in a beauty magazine where the women all look like plastic mannequins.

The second image is very interesting and I like it quite a bit.
