Sharon, I prefer the first version. As Donald observed ---'the image is about the land and the sky.' In the original there is a connection between land and sky that is totally lacking in the second version. I think that you should let your instincts rule instead of mere convention. That is only my opinion.

The cropped version is not pleasing. If it is necessary to obey commandments then crop some of the sky but not the grass.
Try this: open the first image in lytebox and enjoy it for a few minutes, let your eye wander over the detail and toning. Then hit the arrow to bring up the crapped version. Suddenly the interesting detail has been removed as the major part of the image becomes some smudgy black clouds. Quickly flick back to the original - ahh, relief. Something to look at again.
Break the rules and make some art.
