A few more Insects ... Clowes Wood

Conditions today still not best, very breezy, so went to Clowes Wood near where I live.

I have not seen a snake fly in a good few years so the day was not wasted...

#1 Snakefly, Xanthostigma xanthostigma (I think!)

Why it is called a snake fly? ( I guess I should google that question instead...) My favourite here is the last one...I like where it landed too...

If you imagine the fly without the wings and legs (as you do), then it is very snake-like.

Nice series. I take it the caption for #3 should be for #4.

One interesting creature! I don't think I have ever seen one on this side of the pond.

oops! I should have checked the post more carefully! Corrected now

Dan, I think it's at least 10 years since I last saw one. They are easy to miss (imo) and I was lucky this one was on the stump of a felled tree. About 3/4 cm in length it was still almost invisible.

Izzie, One of my sources says 'Snakeflies get their name from their long 'necks' and broad flat heads which can be raised above the rest of their body giving the appearance of a snake about to strike.'

Thanks for posting the images, James, particularly of the snakefly. Like Dan, I also haven't seen one in the US. I like the fly on the fern bud, too!

Thanks for the info. I really did not have much time today as it was garden day after a whole week of rain.
