    Heater Creek Falls

Finally! tried my 10 stop ND filter. A friend and I hunted up these falls today near Detroit Lake Oregon. It was a bit breezy at 2500 feet today. Any comments are always appreciated. This was a 30 sec. exposure, f8, 200ISO.

    Very nice color and composition!

Did you try faster shutter speeds? I ask because my experience is that you would have been able to produce the same effect in the water using a lot faster shutter speed, no slower than 1 second and perhaps as fast as 1/6 second, depending of course on how fast the water was flowing. Using a faster shutter speed would have allowed you to stop more of the action in the greenery (its blurring is a distraction for me). You could have achieved about the same exposure you achieved using no filter, ISO 100, f/8 and 1/6 second. Or if needed, you could have slowed down your shutter speed more using whatever combination of smaller aperture and/or use of a polarizer would have been necessary.

Thanks Mike. I tried a lot of stuff! - see new posting. I can see in this first one that I have some blueness at the top that isn't pleasing. I think the circular polarizer is something that takes some time to learn well. Anyway, the new post is f22 and another that I like a lot at f10. Thanks as always for your comments.

I now gather from one of your recent posts that you used a circular polarizer and the 10-stopper in the first photo. If I'm understanding you correctly, the information provided in my first post about achieving the same exposure without using the 10-stopper is about 1 1/2 - 2 stops off. That's because I didn't know you used a polarizer when I made those computations.

If your polarizer is a good one, it won't add a color cast. Having said that, I don't see anything troubling about the sky that you see.

It would be helpful if you would provide the exif information for all three photos along with info about whatever filters you used.

I have quite a good circular polarizer that was used in all three shots including the the 10 stop. I agree I think the sky is fine, it is more the top tier of the falls in the first shot that looked bluish to me. The sunlight angle was coming from over the top of the falls..a bit tricky at times.
    Here's info for: #2 f22, 1/8sec, iso 640
    #3 f10, 1/15sec, iso 320

The top section you mention that looks bluish to you doesn't appear that way to me using my calibrated monitor. Darker, yes. Color cast, no.

Why did you use anything other than the base ISO (assuming the base ISO is 100) in the three photos? I ask because except for one small possibility in the first photo, I can't think of a reason to use anything other than ISO 100.

Good, not blue to your eye. Thanks. I guess novice experimentation is all I can say.

Thanks Binnur :-) It would have been nice to have a bit more foreground. There wasn't much room on that road to play around too much - straight down! the other side.
