About the hat...

I believe there are two particularly strong reasons to photograph a person wearing a hat such as this one: either because it is completely out of the person's character to wear it or because it is completely within the person's character to wear it. We already know from Kim that the latter situation applies in this case.

The hat adds a nice symmetry to the image by creating a shadow underneath the hat that is comparable to the shadow underneath his chin. That shadow also frames his eyes in a way that makes me think his eyes are concentrating on something; lacking that shadow, I doubt that I would feel that way.

He's very masculine and his presence is intimidating; however, after getting to know him, I find him to be one of the kindest and gentlest handlers I have met.

Interesting. That came through to me in the image. “Gentle Giant”. I would like to met him and photograph him. I have met professional boxers who carry those personae.

I did purposefully seek out that pond of light as it was just what I was looking for.

I wasn't wild about that tree from the get go. Truthfully, I am much better at cloning/blending, but not to the level to get rid of that. I'll use this image to continue to advance those skills.

But I'll tell you one thing: I wouldn't pick a fight with either one of them (but I'd certainly like them at my back).

Notwithstanding any technical details, I love this! Look at the dog's expression. As if he's saying, "I'm with you Dad, what's next?" I am forever impressed with the depth of emotion and feeling that can exist between people and their four-foot friends.
