    Roseness

Somebody said, It's not what something looks like but what it looks like in a photograph - or words to that effect. I don't particularly like roses - thorny green sticks with the occasional pompom of colour atop - but I think they can be used to make interesting photographs.

These images were shot in the botanic garden, hand held on a day with a restless wind and scudding cloud. (Best viewed in lytebox)

    1. I wanted to show the curve of the petal in this picture. When seen in isolation I think it is sensous. And if I had noticed those tiny drops of moisture I would have attempted to focus on them but they weren't visible to my bespectacled eye.

    2. Since roses generally support sizable colonies of insects, I wondered how bugs see them. Coloured mountains? Cliffs? Waves? The shape of these petals remind of the opera house.

    3. When the outer covering first starts to peel away and the young blossom is first revealed to the world... I think it is kind of erotic... Though I guess the bugs see a new feast ....

Well, I am still at the bottom of the learning curve with the macro lens. All C&C welcome.

Greg, an interesting series, which I like. Kind of wish I'd thought of the approach myself.

They are quite 'soft', but given the conditions, no surprise, but it does create an attractive 'dreamy' feel to the images.

#3... the aphid is a nice inclusion.

ps I have the Canon 100mm lens too, and it has become my 'favourite' for macro subjects like this. But...If you think roses are tricksy and thorny, just wait till you get into the brambles trying for an interesting bug...

Thanks James. I like the lens, too, even though it is giving me some hard lessons about the focal plane and being precise about focusing, and DoF (obviously).

Thanks Brian. If thinking like a bug will produce good pictures, I'm up for it.

Welcome back, stranger! I see that you decided to become creative this time around. I like this series too, like James. #1 could have been dreamier or maybe I was thinking of one of the teachers in Creative Live who specializes in dreamy flower themes...it is quite good and it can be better...

#2 is also dreamy looking. I like that one better plus your running thoughts about how insects see those shapes and crevices to hide and feed nectar from. Like the rusty colour of the 3rd one plus the addition of the wandering aphid. Hey I didn't know it was an aphid until James said so...and I believe him...

Nice job this time around...just goes to show you have a soft side.

They're excellent and to nail the focus I know just how much effort you will have put in.

Question - why is there no Camera/Lens or EXIF showing on your Flickr images?

Thanks Robin. I thought the exif was showing. Or is that only for me?

Odd that as nothing show for me. I use Flickr so I'm signed in and can see it on my own images and others I follow.

    Very strange.
