FYI a conservation officer was on hand. Provincial policy is that the garter snakes can be handled if it is done with the snakes' health and wellness in mind. One snake at a time. No harming or tormenting them. Agitated snakes are to be released immediately. Agitated snakes writhe and try to escape. Placid snakes just sit in your hand (especially if your hands are warm and the air is not) or try to move forward in a straight line at a slow pace with no writhing.

    Neat pictures...

I went out to my grill yesterday and a large king snake was lazing right by it. I chased it off because I didn't want to step on it while I was grilling. They are valuable in that they eat vermin and also eat small rattle snakes. The king snake is a beautiful non-venemous creature also.

Then I saw another smaller king snake in my dog run. I didn't want my dogs to kill it so I chased it of with a broom. It was able to get under my garage door, even though the door was closed. I left it there because I have had a few mice in the garage and supposed the snake might have a meal. I also figured that since it got in under the door, it could get out. I haven't seen the snake today although I looked under my car before I drove out of the garage this morning...

I found one in my gardening boot one day. I am glad that I didn't try to slip the boots on. Even though I am not afraid of a king snake, I would have been shocked to find one in my boot. (shocked is a pretty mild word) One of my dogs alerted me to the snake in the boot...

These are neat shots but eeeeewwwwwwwwwwww. I not like those slippery ones. Any snakes of any kind reminds of me of the most dangerous snakes in Oz (or the world for that matter) -- the taipan. Brave little girl.

That would have freaked me out!

Yes Izzie I thought she was very brave too! Then again, maybe she is simply fearless and the brave ones are the ones who are afraid of snakes but still handle them...

One of our neighbours across the street from us decided to volunteer at our local zoo. He is the retired President of AAA so he has some time in his hands. Everything was honky-dory with his volunteering until one day last year, he was asked to tackle the snake area. The newspaper headline should had read "High falluting executive scared of snakes in the local zoo, fainted." After a month of dodging the exercise he decided to face it so to speak. I would have liked to be the fly on the wall on his first exercise. True story.

    P.S. I am not brave.
