FYI a conservation officer was on hand. Provincial policy is that the garter snakes can be handled if it is done with the snakes' health and wellness in mind. One snake at a time. No harming or tormenting them. Agitated snakes are to be released immediately. Agitated snakes writhe and try to escape. Placid snakes just sit in your hand (especially if your hands are warm and the air is not) or try to move forward in a straight line at a slow pace with no writhing.
