    Mama Mia and Lucy

Friday was a long day at the wheel. I drove up to the Mojave Desert near Edwards Air Force Base to pick up two dogs that had been pulled from the Lancaster, California Shelter. The traffic was horrible along several portions of the 160 mile one way drive and the round-trip took me 8 hours.

    I picked up Mama Mia...

My wife bathed her but, she is still feeling low from her spay surgery at the shelter. I will shoot a decent picture of her after Judy grooms her. Hopefully, she will feel better tomorrow - of not we will take her to our vet. She is on pain meds now...

I also picked up Lucy who we "think" is Mama Mia's daughter.

Lucy is feeling fine and Judy bathed and groomed her. Her coat was so matted that she had to be shaved down almost to the skin. That is why she is wearing the sweater...

I feel for those dogs you rescue...I am glad they will be well cared for at your place and be used to having other dogs with them...they'd be running and playing like blazes before they know it. Good job, Richard.

I don't know why Richard but Lucy's pictures just break my heart. She looks so intelligent and yet sad. ..wanting to trust but... Maybe that isn't her story at all but those shots take me there.
So great you and your wife can do this kindness for them.

Both Lucy and Mama Mia were owner surrenders. Even though they had not been taken care of very well, it still must be traumatic for any dog to be given up by its owner and find itself in a cold and impersonal shelter. Then be taken home by a complete stranger.

Lucy is warming up to me now and has already adopted my wife as her friend.

Mama Mia is on the mend and has been groomed a bit but, I will still wait a few days until she becomes comfortable before her portrait session.

By the way, these are our five dogs. Three of them: Sasha, Sweetie and Oliver were rescues...

They are quite a crew :-) How lucky you are. We are currently only blessed with a very old miniature poodle -phantom markings - or as we describe his coloring reverse skunk ;-). Glad they are adjusting - it is astounding how adaptable they are.

I would bet it doesn't take long for those little dogs to figure out that their life is about to get better.

You couldn't be more correct.... Judy grooms the dogs as the first procedure. I am sure that many of them have never had so much intimate contact with a human. Usually, they fall in love with her immediately.

Sometimes,it takes me just a tad longer to get on their good side but, I am usually able to accomplish that also...

Usually, when driving them home. I place the carrier in the passenger seat next to me and talk to them all the way home as well as stick my fingers through the carrier gate.

Sometimes I will stop and get a fast food hamburger with no condiments and feed them little pieces as I drive home. I did that for a Chihuahua and her four puppies. She would lick my fingers. When we got home I stuck my hand in the carrier to lift her our and she bit me four times before I could remove my hand She was just protecting the pups. After a while, she got to know and like me - that took more treats
