    Helios 44M-4 2/58

I have the loan of a Helios 44M-4 58mm f2 lens to use on my Fuji X-T1 but haven't been able to get out until this morning to try it.

The eldest wanted to take the dog out so after I had picked myself up and checked he wasn't a robotic replacement I bunged the camera over my shoulder and we went down to our local beach for an a bit of fresh air before breakfast. The lens isn't biting sharp wide open but at f2.8 it is not only sharp but still gives a nice background separation. There are hints of the swirly bokeh it is famous for showing but I need some sunlit trees or similar to get spectral highlights and really get it to produce the goods.

Nice, sharp foreground and set off well from the background, especially in #2 to #4.

    Hi Robin,

FSU lenses should never be underrated and you've shown why. f2 is sharp on close-ups, especially flowers, leaves etc (and brings out the famed bokeh). f4-5.6 is excellent for street, using zone technique).

Thanks for the tip Boab - oh - and thanks very much for loaning me this lens. Just goes to show how helpful and friendly members on here can be.

I did get out again this afternoon with the lens and got the shot below. It was taken at f2.8 and pre-focused on the line drawn in the sand that Thomas was using as a launch point.

Its a good lens to work with, a little low in contrast which means it processes up nicely letting you add just the amount of boost you want.

Aye, ah have a 44m ( the M-4's grandad) which produces great pastel colours and ah rarely have tae/want tae, do anything to the photos (for certain situations) e.g.
