    Long Exposure

At last I have been able to edit an image which was shot in April. I have put lots of things in order in my life for the last couple of months and now I'm ready to carry on my photography. I wrote about my goals about photography for 2017 at the beginning of this year and I will try to stick with my goals. So, first long exposures, second infrared photography and then shooting stars.. Let's see how they go

The image quality of this photo is not that good as exposing is always difficult when the sun dissappears behind the high hills or mountains when shooting into the sun. I merged two exposures for a better image but I still had to lift the shadows heavily. I didn't know the location at all and some people took me there for shooting. Otherwise I don't think I would choose this place for shooting as there are so many better locations around for photography. Anyway, at least that shooting session was a start for me. And here I'm with my image

    C&C appreciated as always

    Hi Binnur,

Beautiful colors and composition. Sticking to the long exposure theme, sometimes moving elements (clouds, light streaks) really add emphasis on a composition so don't totally avoid movement within a long exposure; remember that long exposures can eliminate unwanted distractions (moving people when shooting monuments) and the effects can greatly benefit your experience. On or two critiques regarding this image, notice how the reflected shadows of the tree can at first glance look like a smudge, also either through your processing or long exposure you've created a glow around the base of the tree and shoreline. You might be able to emphasize the glowing look by adding a bit of blur to simulate fog or to lessen the sharp detail of the light. Looking forward to seeing more of your 2017 advancements in photography.

    Re: Long Exposure

Thanks for looking and commenting John You are right that long exposures can be used in lots of situations and I really like the effects of long exposures. I hope I will be lucky enough to find good opportunities for my trials.

For this image, smudgedly look of the reflected shadows of the tree is because of the long exposure and I'm used to seeing that kind of reflections as I watch a lot of long exposed images on the internet. The glow around the shoreline and around the base of the tree comes from the actual light but it is much less visible in the shot of the same scene without the ND filter. So, the long exposure made it more visible and also my PP work exaggerated it a bit more. I actually like the effect around the base of the tree, but I agree with you about the shoreline. I will see what I can do about it.

I appreciate your comments , thanks again

Binnur, If this is a not so good location I can't wait to see the good ones ;-) Very pretty shot - I feel serene. How long was this particular exposure? I find that bit of light around the tree an enhancement as well.

I have viewed this a few times Binnur, love the colours, the trees great, I have no problem with the water but something bugged me

Just had another look and decided I prefer it with the foreground removed.

    Re: Long Exposure

I did an edit using a 16:9 crop, placing the bottom quadrant line on the horizon line. I did have to content aware fill some of the grasses and a rock but it makes the eye go directly to the scene without interruption. Stagecoach and I both had the same thoughts; otherwise not just a good first try, but a good image all the way around.

There are not much items within the frame and the colours are limited too.... a kind of minimalist approach with a wonderful output...really enjoyed this; i too wonder the same way as Susan did

    Re: Long Exposure

Looking at it again, I agree that the foreground doesn't contribute. I tried simply cropping it off, but that would require a crop from the left also, I think, to maintain a pleasing aspect ratio. It will be a little short if you crop all of the foreground, so cropping some and editing out the rest might be a reasonable option.

    Re: Long Exposure

Thanks for looking and commenting Susan. I merged two exposures which are 360 sec and 427 sec to make this image.

Location is very nice to be in and to watch around. But when it comes to shooting, high hills hide the sun and everything looks dark even if the sun is not below the horizon yet. That's why it is a difficult location for shooting, this is what I meant by saying 'bad location'. I usually prefer the sunsets on the water which usually give better images.

I'm glad that you are happy with the image

    Re: Long Exposure

Thank you Grahame, Chris and Dan for your comments about the crop of the FG. I think I agree with you that the image becomes more minimalistic without the FG. I also like the image with the FG as the FG gives some info about the environment though. So , I will think about it, I might crop some / all of the FG before uploading to Flickr

Thanks all of you as you are always here to help, I really love CinC

In addition to all of the above comments, I notice that there is a bit of softness in the grass growing on the island. That touch of softness, surely caused by the wind blowing the grass during the long exposure, goes very nicely with the overall mood.
