I read an article that mentioned using the moonlight to your advantage with foregrounds when shooting stars so I thought I would experiment

I think it's something you need to experiment with to see the exposure range results with respect to ease of PP and of course getting the colours you want. Another thing that would help with that tree scene is if it was possible to shoot more to the left to reduce the suns light impact but chances are access or framing aren't possible

    I think it's a scene that's well worth a try Binnur.

If you are familiar with the Photographers Ephemeris it's easy to work out the best days and the time of night for shooting each side of the full moon. And hopefully you will not be as unlucky as me and miss out on the last 6 days opportunity for shooting at night due to rain and heavy cloud

Next time hang your bag at your tripod, that may be useful
But knowing me I'd leave it hanging there when I move into the sea to get a different angle

Thank you Grahame I am planning to shoot stars this summer and actually I was thinking of buying a big light source to lighten the FG subject. After seeing how the moonlight can be helpful, I might also try your way

That looks like an excellent location for star trails. Can't wait to see the results. I am going out tonight to try some star trails for the first time - I'm excited but not holding my breath. ;-) We have 3 good days of weather predicted so it's time to give it a try.

Another method you could consider Binnur is to use a hand held flash. With long exposures you can have time to move around setting it off manually.

Good luck with the star trails Susan. Please post your results, even if you are not happy with them as it helps us all learn.

Setting it off manually -- meaning you have to use a remote? Was that what you did with your image? Just curious...

No remote release needed Izzie. If you are doing a long exposure, walk away from the camera with your flash in hand and simply fire it manually in the directions where you know will benefit from additional lighting.

No, that shot was taken with no artificial light, it was just the moon and its reflected light from the sky used.

OK...I got it. Thanks. I was sort of thinking that if she walks away from the camera how can she press the shutter and the light at the same time...so I thought she will have to have a remote to do both...just thinking out loud.
