Nice shot.
The back leaf bothers me, I will have removed and the bud would have been well centered
Jean meant the green leaf in the right top corner; i couldn't decipher your novelite like caption;what is that A. Bronte? you should have included a well seen thorn to make the story complete...
It's a new bud and branch so no obvious thorns A. Bronte = Anne Bronte the lady that wrote the quote.
Brian, I like roses (and the Brontes )
I also like the way you have seen this shot. Looking closer into the image ( in the Lytebox), that bud does look beautiful. I think though on full screen, that it gets a bit lost in the background. Where it mine.... I believe I would try the following: -
Firstly I would introduce a tighter, probably square, crop.
Then, I would selectively brighten and and sharpen the rose bud, and its stem, to separate it more from the background. I would also consider darkening the brighter areas of the background slightly to increase the effect. (maybe a soft vignette?)
Finally depending on how effective the previous steps were, I would consider a slight brightening of the leaf in the foreground.
I understand, .... I do really like this capture.... wish my roses were looking like that at the moment, they are a bit sad we have had very heavy rain for a couple of days and everthing is knocked about.. however, I digress ... I do not normally do this, but I tried the changes I suggested to see if I could deliver on my suggestion ....It would all have to be seriously subtle or the unity would be lost? I did try a square crop but couldn't find the right one.
What do you think?
If you wish, I will of course take it down...

It is a great compliment that you like the edit.Don't you dare take it down! You found the crop I was looking for. Perhaps a wee bit too bright on the front leaf?
As regards that front leaf, it is a matter personal taste... I didn't actually brighten it . I appled a bit of increased vibrance to the background areas to slightly lift the tones (particularly the blue area in the bottom left) which has had the effect of an apparent brightening, It can easily be toned down locally or more generally.
Which ever way you go with your 'final' treatment it is a very nice capture
+1 to the crop. A captivating shot Brian.
