    Charleston Single

The "Charleston Single" is a unique architectural style which evolved to take advantage of the long narrow home lots prevalent in the Charleston, South Carolina area...

    Charleston Single

Some of the unique parameters of the Charleston Single is that it is one room wide and several rooms deep. It usually has a porch along the length of both floors. A carriage gate opens to the street on the porch side and a faux front door controls entrance to the porch; ensuring privacy. The actual front door of the home is about halfway down the porch on the long side of the home. The porches are situated to take advantage of the prevailing breezes and to shade the living areas.

Very nice, I think Toronto uses the same design.

Nice houses. Sliding windows with rods. The other long side is without windows I presume?

    Re: Charleston Single

We used to call apartments that were one room wide and through which you always needed to pass through one room to get to others "railroad flats" for obvious reasons...

These Charleston Singles were in the Charleston Historic District and were in pristine condition. However, I saw others, inland in this city, that were in all states of repair and disrepair. It goes to show you that in real estate the most important actor is "Location, Location, Location!"

    Re: Charleston Single

    Thanks,

Like I said in another thread, my normal type shooting is primarily of people but, I found the residential architecture of Charleston so very intriguing that I spent most of my time photographing the houses...
