Ruined Sunset

It seems everyone here is talking climate change and some are jumping up and down wanting to ban certain plastic items. Such a pity that equal passion and concern is not put into controlling where some plastics end up.

My objective with this pic was to show the reality of what's happening in our surroundings, something we normally omit when framing.

It was shot 30 minutes after sunset.

I crisped up the foreground leaving the sea and sky less pronounced intentionally in the hope that it would draw the eye more.

I like it.
When I click on the image and play with the position on the screen, I think I would have cut about 1/3 of the upper part, just above the black cloud. It gives me a kind of panorama with more attention to the garbage and the sunset.
On second thought I'm not sure anymore.

i like the beauty of the upper part and disgust human activities that create such filthy masses around !!!! (But inyour image they too have some beauty )

We have similar problems here too So, I would suggest you should crop your main subject completely and make a lovely image which includes only the sea and the sky

Cropping from the top is certainly possible and I had also thought about cropping from the bottom but too many options.

Our local TV daily evening news has a 'shot of the day' feature that has displayed a couple of my 'pretty' pictures so now I'm going to undertake a social experiment and see if they will feature a not so pretty one

We have similar problems here too So, I would suggest you should crop your main subject completely and make a lovely image which includes only the sea and the sky

But that would defeat the purpose of this image

The light in your image is key for me. It provides a balance between the two subjects. ..that pretty light revealing both beauty and ugliness all at once. Nice image Grahame. It would be interesting to hear if the TV peeps give it a go.

With regard to the light trying to achieve a balance between the areas was quite a challenge and it still amazes me how much we can pull out of a scene which was pretty dark.

You know, this is a strong message. If you can make one difference, it is a good start. Having lived in a continent island for many years before I came here, I have seen some first hand damage of what plastic can do to the fish population, especially the porpoise...very heartbreaking. Nice shot.

I'm actually finding it quite enjoyable and at the same time challenging to be a "Rubbish Photographer"

Here's another variation from that session ................

If you are meaning to be a "rubbish photographer" well..........you had achieved it in this one. The first one is not as this last one because the scenery at the top takes a bit of prominence than the rubbish (which got the notice later on). With this shot here, B-I-I-I-G-G-G-G! difference, the rubbish is more prominent, sharper and more to my face sort of thing, if you know what I mean...and I think the difference is that the first shot has more of the clouds whereas this one is more shorter and to the point, less clouds, less distraction. I am not liking your rubbish photographer goal but I understand that someone has to do it to point the attention to protecting our environment.

P.S. I think I like your other project better -- draining of the swamp???

Thank you Izzie for that breakdown between the two images, much appreciated.

I will keep this project up for a while until I can get back to my stars by moonlight next week.

But until then, I have two goals, the first is to get a shot similar to these two from a lower position (shovel may be needed ) and the second using a long lens to compress subject to background if I can find a suitable location.

Big difference is right - Your first shot is so much more nuanced and powerful I think because it isn't so in your face. The light, angle and composition are also much stronger IMO Looking forward to more.
