    Color fringing

Had a bad case of color fringing, used Gaussian blur tool 15% on background layer and changing blend mode to color.

Wouldn't using the proper tool in ACR/LR or PS achieve a better result John?

For clarity, I gather the uncorrected is the right hand, while the fixed one is on left?

This method, not being tailored to the specific colours* of the CA, has caused problems with smudged edges to all colours.

    Hi Dave,

Tried to correct in LR which turned the fringe gray.

Some CA does take a lot of subtle movement of the colour range and amount sliders to get optimal corrections, especially if the image also contains bold colours with sharp edges, as this does. I'm not familiar with the CA controls in LR, were you using the manual ones? (rather than just the auto checkbox)

Yes, used manual ones as LR doesn't have auto checkbox.

I take back previous statement, supposedly when you click on "Remove CA" the program is supposed to do something, when I clicked on it nothing in particular happened. Tutorial stated that use of sliders should be used if no improvement.

    Hi Izzie,
No I didn't, I usually edit thru Lightroom in case I need to do significant noise reduction. I find that either LR or Nik dfine works best for NR. I might try Camera RAW on this though. Thanks for suggestion.

Camera Raw's defringing operation can be automated and uses lens data. I suspect this will work fine for OEM lenses, but if you are shooting a third party lens, you'll have to do it manually. I find that DxO Labs is better at noise reduction than the Adobe solutions, but that is an expensive route to go.

    Izzie,

I tried Camera RAW 9.5 which is associated with Elements and could not find a defringing option.

John - I am using the most recent version of Camera Raw (9.10...) and this feature has not changed in some time. The selection and settings are where I show in this screen capture.

It's a long time since I used Elements but from memory, the version of ACR that you get with it is a cut- down version and it doesn't include lens correction. I seem to remember using a plug-in in Elements for that. It may have changed since then of course.

Sorry John, I have not used Elements at all so I really do not know the difference. I had started with Photoshop 4 and been with Photoshop since, apart from CC.

    Manfred,

It seems that my version of Elements (14) only supports up to 9,5, still checking to see if there is an update. I see there is a CA (fringing) correction tool in Capture NX-D, might have to try that method; hopefully the noise reduction tool is up to par.
