    Mini Competition #126

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forum

I made your image larger. You may want to read this to get a better idea of posting images. https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/forums/thread5745.htm You can also practice uploading images if you are uncertain. Drop me a PM if you get stuck.

    Marina pano

Just to show how easy it is to do panos with the Pink Panasonic G1, I took the 6 shots that made this pano while balanced on my mountain bike with my left foot on a railing. I basically couldn't be bothered to get off as I was too tired.

    10,000x3300 pixels for the original.

    1. Look at the scene and decide the span to shoot
    2. Start on left and compose one frame. Allow plenty of vertical space to allow for loss of height when stitching. Go to far right to check composition is OK there too
    3. Switch off auto-focus after getting focus (although on the G1 you can hold exposure and focus with one button)
    4. Select exposure lock on the camera.
    5. Take the series of shots from left to right, overlapping at least 25% to allow for stitching.
    6. Load RAWs to Photoshop and 'select all'
    7. Make RAW edit changes, then synchronise all RAWs
    8. Open files in photoshop
    9. FILE\AUTOMATE\PHOTOMERGE and click 'load current files'
    10. Crop and use lens correction if needed

Thanks Rob. I will try it and see how it goes. The big problem for me is to get a number good shots in a row. The last time I tried it I did not take the auto-focus off. I never thought of it but now it make sense. I will try it.

    Rob,
I thought i knew how to do all the steps, but the product after photoshop merges everything is less than all right. The places where the photos are stiched aren't like how I would imagine them to be, and towards the right side, the edges aren't straight and some of the photos don't seem to be used. Any helpful hints?

Ooops, I didn't explain that very well. Sorry. I forgot the step to lock exposure - corrected now. You need to crop the finished product as it will have ragged edges after stitching. Is that what you meant?

    Rob,
I wonder if you should also switch off auto ISO. What do you think? Also I have noticed that using a wide angle lens in portrait mode distorts the edges of the frame so much that stitching is impossible. Sorry if I am digressing from the thread theme.

    Hi Grant,

On a DSLR it's best just to use manual exposure - and an added benefit is that the camera metering will act like a light meter so it's easy to pan through the scene to check your selected exposure.

The biggest mistake people make with WA lenses is not keeping the shutter plane vertical - also, if you're using a WA lens vertically then you'll also need a nodal bar so that the camera rotates around the entrance pupil so that what's in the foreground lines up better. It does beg the question of "why do you need to stitch if you have a WA lens" though
