Bird on an old shack

Ventured into the Valley a bit yesterday. We are having some good marine layers, so skies are not great.
Wish I could have more drama/details in the clouds, but didn't happen and I could not fix.

Color and B&W

Not sure the close FL composition works. Hope to get out on a better day with good colors and sky.

The colour version works much better I think. First, the angle works better for the shack as it gives a better idea of its shape/size and makes it look more 3d. Second, the off-centered crop is more dynamic. Third, both foreground and background have different colours in them and this extends their depth and separates them from each other with the shank being in the middle. In the BW version both the foreground and background have a similar shade of grey which does not add depth to the picture. The blue mountains are completely lost in the BW image.

Thank you Dem, for your feedback. I agree with you completely . The vibrant greens against the blue mountains (and they do really look blue under this type of light) add some depth as well I think. The Skagit Valley is so beautiful right now. .

Color version for me, I think the monochrome treatment lessened the appeal of the clouds. The structure does stand out more in the monochrome version though.

When you post B&W and color of the same image or near variants, in most cases-means not always- the color wins the heart-that's quite natural; here also the same thing happened.

Color for me too. Dem's thoughtful comments are very helpful. Each year spring in PNW still leaves me gob smacked and I've lived here for 30 years.

Yes, I also prefer the colour version. (Interesting that colour is spelled differently in our two locations only a few miles apart but with an international boundary in between!)

When I first looked at the BW version, I thought the building was near the shore of a blue lake but see in the colour version that the lake is in reality a green field!

Hope you don't mind and if you do I will delete. I was curious how shot #2 would look in B&W. So a simple conversion with two gradient masks. One going up the other down.

Brian beat me to the punchline. I was going to suggest converting the color one to B/W and then applying filters to separate the various elements to give it more depth. The composition is much better in the color version and, with a little work, a B/W version could be just as effective. My opinion. Worth what you paid for it.

On the way to Mount Baker yesterday, saw many beautiful old barns, so would like to go back out some day and give them a try. Yesterday was too flat, with overcast skies.
