Bellefontaine Cemetery shots -- Part 2 -- for C&C???

Here I took some time to think of how I can process these images...

1 Man under a tree. I like the sun shining underneath the trees on him only lighting his face. I like the character he portrayed though I wasn't able to ask who the is an actor for. He did not have a tent, just the canopy of a tree and a blanket spread on the ground with his goodies near the drama/presentation area. The little head is one of the little boy's brother in the photobombing post here. The cropped legs belongs to the mother.

2 Man under the Tree 2 -- 2 I put the Contrast only effect from Color Efex here and like the dirty look. Here is that little boy again asking about what the man has in his bag. The mother just smile and indulge her curious children. Each of them has their turns learning all about the olden wares of the old guy. I admired the patience of the mother….very indulging never said a word, just smiled and ler her children listen to the old man.

P.S. Hubby is just fascinated though he took the easy way – away from the kids.

3 Man under the tree 3 -- Here is the same guy listening to his visitors, very calm and patient being asked questions and answering each of them as they went along. They were a joy to watch. I believe I was more fascinated by the kids and and the old man's interaction with them that I just stared at the scene before me not taking any shots at all.

Nice series Izzie. The first one is particularly poignant. You might consider taking a small slice from the RHS to tighten the shot up a little and take down some of the BG highlights - particularly the badge on mum's shorts but the boy isn't photobombing. He provides some very nice eye contact for the main subject. It's a very nice study.

Difficult conditions, Izzie, but your shots are clear and crisp. I like very much the light and story told by the first one. Also a nice story in the second. I'm not a fan of the processing, but I'm glad you went with it because you do like it. On the third one the period dress fits so nicely with the background. Looks like you had fun.

For me, Izzie, #1 looks good.

Is the white balance in #2 just a little bit too off? And the child in blue seems a fraction 'hard edged'. Is that part of the processing.

I'm rarely keen on vignettes and #3 is a little too harsh and unnatural looking for my tastes. Otherwise, a good image.

You can probably guess my critique

No, honestly, having been forewarned I might not like the next batch, I was pleasantly surprised by #1 and #2 on first impressions.

#1 looks fairly natural, given the good exposure for the skin tones which has held down the distractions

#2 probably is a little dim (aka gritty) for my personal taste, but who am I to say

#3 has the bold vignette again (I'll say no more), if mine, I'd have cropped off the right hand side to remove the stuff under the tree, however, not having been there and experienced his presentation, I accept I may be missing something.

It is not exactly speckled but you can create something from a baking box or something. It is doable.

Yes, I had fun. Now that I know what makes my husband's brain tick when we go on our outing, I will make sure we have some history trips here and then to match my photographic passion. It was a nice outing...and I had my McDonald french fries afterwards as usual. #2 is different. I thought I'd do something different. Everyone around seems to be neat and tidy but the guy has that certain dirty look in him in the manner he dressed up that day that enchanced the character he was playing...

I do not know, John...it must be. The other options do not have that but it is not all like that when I tried it on other images. This one seems to be more rugged. I just thought it suit the character of the man for whoever he is playing as. (See explanation to Sergio's post..)

Yes I do not know what to do with it but I like the shot. It was a harsh weather condition and I was taking advantage of his location and practicing my technique on Nikon focusing as I had learned two days before going on this trip. The weather said cloudy and I was glad, but not at that place...maybe cloudy somewhere else...

Yes. thank you for passing by and commenting, expressing your preference. I love that shot too. It was my favourite along with all of them here. I guessed it was because I worked hard on them PP more than ever I did with other images.

It is not everyone's taste -- the gritty look -- but I like it the moment I saw it because I remember how nearly everyone was trying to keep themselves clean and fashionly (in that era) but the grittiness of the guy's period top and pants is part of his personality that I admired. Well, also the way he is patient with children, just like a seasoned grandpa, too. I bet you he has a lot of grandchildren to boot in real life to add to his patience too. He is such a natural.

There is a lot I had not shared in some my shots there of the boys and their mother, the partner of the guy too, younger than him like an indulging dad to the kids showing some stuffs from their blanket spread. The story in #3 is not really perfect without a bit of what they have there that interests even and specially little inquisitive visitors.

Good captures, Izzie; in particular, I like number 2 for the captive audience, especially the attention being paid by the little boy. The colour balance doesn't look quite right to me - they seem biased towards the greens, more so in 2 and 3.
