Is the aperture of the lens as recorded by exif an electronic signal or an actual measurement? I ask because when using a teleconverter on a lens with max aperture of f/40 exif shows aperture f/81.

I agree, I assume the TC is a 1.4x losing one stop and it (I assume) is chipped in someway so that the camera (or TC) multiplies the lens' aperture by 2 before recording EXIF.
