For The Numismatists Out There Part Two Lady Liberty

For The Numismatists Out There Part Two ~ A 1918 Twenty Centavo Silver Coin ~ Lady Liberty. The flip side of this coin is a Bald Eagle and shield. This side has 'Lady Liberty' holding a hammer that is resting on an anvil. On her left side is a smoking Mayon Volcano. I have never seen a barefoot lady wearing a flowing sarong working in a blacksmiths shop. Still and all it makes for an interesting relief. Also noteworthy is that America kept the Spanish spelling, Filipinas. Later it would morph into The Philippines. Lady Liberty is working hard to catch up to her new masters.

    Good find Brian.

Just looked at my pics of Mayon and the smokes going in the opposite direction

it's the seat on my walker. Same as the first shot but this time I didn't black it out.

I just googled and you're right almost all of the shots have the smoke going to the left. For what it's worth it was a Pinoy that did the engraving and the thought is that his daughter was the model. Perhaps with ISIS trying for a caliphate in the Philippines the wind is blowing from a new direction

The look of this side appears more natural to my eye, though of course I have never seen the coin itself. Perhaps your lighting and/or post-processing was different with the treatment of the two sides.

I like this tabletop better than the other one but it's still not ideal in my mind; I would go for a relatively plain tabletop that has variation in tonal value created by the lighting. Having said that, I've never looked up the typical tabletop of high-end coin photography.

Either have I. The only non reflective black I have is the seat of my walker. The first shot I painted it to flat black. The second one I left the grain in. This gave a sort of choppy sea effect and meant I didn't have to mask. I liked seeing your various ways to reflect light. Got me thinking.

It doesn't have to be non-reflective to be effective. If you have relatively total control over your light source (as opposed to using only sunlight), you can manipulate the position of the light source(s) to achieve whatever results you want.

I'm weighing up the possible directions for my photography. Lunar/planetary, table top or microscope are all in the running. Not that I'm in a rush. For the next 6 to 8 months our priority is fence construction.
